Frequently Asked Questions
We are here to serve you.
Please do not hesitate to call us with your questions.
What do I need to do to prepare for my first
appointment?
Click on
New Patient Forms and you will find an
instructional letter as well a substantial questionnaire to fill out.
If I have to have testing, will it hurt?
The first set of skin testing, called prick
testing, feels like a pencil point touched against your skin. The most
common discomfort from this is itching (like a mosquito bite) at the
positive test sites. After we review the first set of testing (and put
on some anti-itch cream), we may decide to do what is called "intradermal
testing". This involves tiny needle pricks under the skin.
Intradermal testing is limited to those potential allergens that we need to
investigate further based on your history and initial testing.
Will I have to have allergy shots?
The recommendation to start immunotherapy (allergy
shots) is an individualized decision made by the patient and Dr. Hoover
based on the results of his evaluation. A visit to the allergist does
not automatically mean you will have to start allergy shots.
How old
does my child need to be before he/she can be tested?
There is no minimal age. The decision to test
is made with the parents, based upon the problems the child is having.
What insurance does Dr. Hoover participate in?
The major insurers we accept include Aetna, Anthem
(all except Healthkeepers), Beechstreet, Cigna, CCN, 4Most, First Health,
Southern Health, Tricare, United Healthcare, and Virginia Health
Network. We also accept other, smaller insurers. Please call
776-5656 to see if we participate in your plan.
